JISC Open Source Software Advisory Service. Call for proposals to HE and FE institutions to bid for ~£70,000 per year over two years, to establish and run a pilot advisory service "designed to collate and disseminate information about the availability, and the respective strengths and weaknesses, of Open Source Software products relevant to UK Further and Higher Education". Closing date: 8/5/2003.

W3C European Semantic Web Tour. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is holding a series of free one day events across Europe (Rome, London, Munich, Athens, Brussels) from June 10 to 24, 2003, the goals of which are to promote the semantic web, i.e. having web data defined and linked in a way that enables effective discovery, automation, integration, and reuse across various applications. The European Commission plans to improve disabled access to web services. Erkki Liikanen is the European Commissioner responsible for Enterprise and the Information Society. On 11 April he made an interesting speech about the eEurope 2005 Action Plan's emphasis on improving access to web services for people with disabilities. Full speech. RM wins South Yorkshire elearning contract. South Yorkshire eLearning Partnership (SYeLP) has announced that that RM plc has been appointed preferred bidder to deliver the £38m rollout of the South Yorkshire eLearning Programme. Press Release.

Useful newsletter from the Sloan Consortium. The Sloan Consortium is now publishing an excellent newsletter - Sloan-C View, with 4 issues to date, featuring, for example:

  • blended learning;
  • cost-effectiveness;
  • quality enhancement.

Computer supported collaborative learning. Euro-cscl aims to provide a community site and resource of information for practitioners (teachers), researchers and school administrators in the Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) field. Fairly early days, but definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Educational technology web-logs. George Siemens has compiled a useful list, which looks as if it will be updated from time to time.
