The shape of the next phase of online learning

Stephen Downes points to a 9 November 2011 Educause piece by Jarret Cummings and writes:

"I think the shape of the next phase of online learning is being defined: reliance on open educational resources, supported by some sort of automated, analytics based and competency based testing mechanism."

But not until the notoriously protectionist establishment recognises the value of the improved student learning experience over the financial incentives of research metrics. We need some discipline led optimal and collective concept units to be produced by teams, and sustained with their communities, to prove the gains of the concept. In the meantime more that half will probably produce more of the same (using others to 'inspire') for the need to raise personal profile over discipline gain.

@TerryMCANDREW... and the really big problem with this, at least in Australia (and I suspect in many other English-speaking universities), is that university-based research is subsidized by the income universities receive from teaching. Lawrence Cram has presented at the HERDSA conference on this, but no one has really examined the consequences.
