Having a customary New Year clear out I came across this eight inch floppy diskette from the state-of-the-art IBM word-processor that lived round the corner from my workroom in Granville College. I think it had a capacity of 128 (or possibly 256) kB. Diskettes like this had been in use since 1971.
on my part-irement in 2005 I downsized my home and had to part with some old friends from my storage - an RM380Z and a 'portable' Amstrad PPC 640 (my right shoulder has never recovered from that 6kg weight!!). Throwing out the 5 1/4" discs I felt like I was committing a sacrilege, but in spite of advertising no-one wanted to give them a home (not even local museum!).
I have fond memories too of the 8-inch floppies. Whirr Whirr Click Clunk!! Memories of Wordstar surface at this point - oh happy days!
